Handheld Computers

As the cost of rugged handhelds has reduced and mobile communications have improved, you see them deployed in more and more applications across different industries. By giving the worker direct access to pertinent information and allowing them to conduct business at the point of a transaction or information capture, you increase efficiency and liberate your staff.

What’s exciting is that the future of mobile computing is exploding before our very eyes. For instance, the recent introduction of Google’s Android will spur many hitherto unheard of applications. There is an Android application that lets you input barcode information into your phone in order to obtain information about products. So if you are in a shop and you see something that you like, but want some more information you can scan the barcode and reviews about that product will pop up. You can also search for better prices at different locations. The customer will certainly be king and have the tools to hand to exercise their power. In addition, major advances in the iPhone platform, the Blackberry and the growth of the netbooks will also drive more business applications.

In the manufacturing and distribution industries the mobile computing device has become invaluable as workers can tap into a myriad of essential information such as customer information, inventory, item and order history and complete a traditional paper based process electronically while away from their company network. The advantages are that it eliminates duplicate data entry and provides a seamless interaction between the worker and the business processes.

The mobile handheld has become a well recognised and tried and tested device for the hotel and restaurant sector. In many instances it has replaced the stationary POS systems which typically created bottlenecks due to waiting staff standing in line at the till. Instead, with the handheld unit they are free to go from one table to another taking payments or orders which are automatically processed.

In the health care sector handheld or PDA devices are slowly becoming more popular among physicians, allowing them to have immediate access to relevant clinical facts and patient data. In the US PDAs are used to enhance clinicians' knowledge about their patients and provide easy access to accurate chronologic information such as IV lines, antibiotic therapy, and even helped house staff to rapidly retrieve and review patients' records. In the UK doctors have used them, often on their own initiative, to record clinical information, make lists of tasks that need doing, and to look up information online.

Hanheld Organizer story

I remember when handheld organizer came out one year around Christmas. I thought this was the coolest thing ever made. What could be better than a cute little handheld organizer disguised as a computer? I went into to Best Buy and found my way to the handheld PDA section. I looked at one that said, “Try Me” underneath it. I had no idea what I was looking at. I asked a sales person and he sounded similar to a computer himself, listing off all of the billions of features that each one of the small machines contains. I decided that I wasn’t smart enough, popular enough, or disorganized enough to own a handheld organizer…but then they got to be simpler.

While they’re still not simple, press-a-button gadgets, handheld organizers have come down in complexity and are more manageable to the average person. In fact, many individuals today have purchased handheld organizers and are happily using them. When you’re in the market for one, though, there are so many choices and features that it’s difficult to know what would be best for you. But basics are basics, and all handheld organizers have elements such as date books, memo pads, calculators, to-do lists, address books, onscreen keyboards, character recognizers, email, and backlights. Additional software you can purchase lets you play games or music, take pictures, or watch a movie. These are the extras you have to determine whether they really come in handy for you or not.

There are so many choices when it comes to what model of handheld organizer to buy, and because technology is rapidly changing, it would be impossible to rank them; although, there are some important things you should consider when buying a PDA. The most important thing to remember when buying a PDA is that whatever you buy today will be out of date tomorrow. The computer world advances rapidly everyday, and it is impossible to keep up. You need to remember that PDAs are not a personal computer. They need a personal computer to access the Internet and to back-up data. You need to consider what, if any, compatibility issues need to be addressed between your home computer and your PDA. Considering what you will be using your PDA for will help to minimize all of the endless possibilities that you have to choose from. Also, don’t forget to ask other people who own a PDA what kind they have and what their likes and dislikes are regarding their machine.

And if you operate a small business or home based business you will want to keep your special needs in mind.

I never went back and purchased my PDA, and all of my friends think that I’m a freak. I figured that I have lived my life since that day in Best Buy in total disarray, why not thirty more years? I still think that they are cool little machines, and there is still no better invention than to have a little computer tucked away with all of your need-to-knows right there in your back pocket.

PDA Devices
Personal Data Assistants, a 90's technology gadget given new life with innovation

PDA stands for Personal Data Assistant. PDAs are handheld computing devices also called Palm Tops; they can also encompass the Pocket PC category of handheld device.

The humble PDA started off as electronic personal organizers, an electronic replacement to the old analogue (hand-written) style Day Runner or Franklin. The biggest advantage to the electronic day planner was that it could be synchronized with your PC and therefore all your notes would be backed up and replicated, never to be lost as any notepad is extremely susceptible.

The basics features included in any device we call a PDA are:

* Personal Handheld Organizer
* Clock
* Date Book
* Calculator
* Address Book
* Tasklist
* Memo Pad

And, of course, they've almost always included some sort of rudimentary games.

Today's Personal Data Assistants run powerful handheld operating systems depending on the type you buy.
The most popular include:

* Blackberry
* Palm OS
* Windows Mobile

Palm OS and Blackberry are operating systems that were designed for intuitive ease of use, giving the handheld user a maximum of options with a minimum number of clicks. Both systems employ a "select" button system and an escape. The Blackberry uses its wheel to toggle through options. Palm devices use a touch screen that allows you to press the desired on-screen button with a plastic pen called a stylus. The stylus is a pointer designed to press on the Palm's touch screens without damaging it. You could, of course, use your finger to press any of the touch-sensitive buttons on the Palm's screen but that would lead to smudges and fingerprints on the screen.

The Palm OS runs on many different devices by other manufacturers, including the Sony Clie, Handspring Visor and Tapwave Zodiac. The Windows Mobile operating system is an extension of the Microsoft Windows operating system and can run on a wide variety of PDA devices known as Pocket PCs, a slightly different class of PDA that has almost all the same features.

Besides Pocket PCs, Blackberrys and Palms there are a variety of gaming-oriented PDAs as well. While not the gaming powerhouses the PSP might be, devices like Nokia's N-gage and Palm's own Tapwave Zodiac merge the PDA organizer with high-resolution screens and controls for playing games.

Today's palmtops or PDA devices have come a long way since their origins as a personal organizer. Today they come with the ability to communicate wirelessly to networks with wi-fi, allowing the handheld access to any VPN, while Bluetooth gives the handheld abilities to communicate with peripheral devices like hands-free earpieces. Some, like the Blackberry, specializes in wireless voice and data connections, allowing them to send and receive emails, browse the web and act as a mobile phone.

Most PDA devices today are pushing the limits on storage capacity, although only a few have so far ventured into the micro-hard drive territory which greatly expands the storage capacity, making PDAs potentially every bit as powerful and flexible as a desktop PC.
